Lincoln City, Oregon, is a dream destination for families seeking sandy fun, beautiful beaches, unique attractions and unforgettable coastal memories. Whether you're traveling with young children or teens, this laid-back beach town offers a mix of natural beauty and plenty of activities that blend exploration, relaxation, and just the right amount of adventure.
Here’s a look at some of the top family-friendly beach activities in Lincoln City to enjoy during your visit.
Finders Keepers - Hunt for Glass Floats
While exploring the beautiful Lincoln City beaches, be on the lookout for hand-blown glass floats that are hidden along the seven miles of sandy beach. Inspired by the history of traditional Japanese glass fishing floats that once washed ashore, the program seeks to recreate the joy of discovering these treasures. Over 3,000 glass treasures are hidden each year by local float fairies! When you find one, it's all yours!

Beachcombing in Lincoln City: A Treasure Hunt for All Ages
Beachcombing is a fun and relaxing activity the whole family can enjoy together. While the city is famous for its hand-blown glass floats, there are a variety of other treasures as well. Keep your eyes peeled for:
- Colorful sea glass shaped by the tides
- Unique seashells and driftwood
- Semi-precious gemstones like agate and jasper
- Fossils from ancient marine life
- Petrified wood and crystals formed by the ocean water
Make sure to abide by the following beachcombing rules:
- Agates, jasper, petrified wood, and crystals: Up to 1 gallon per person per day
- Driftwood: One cubic yard per person per day
- Shells: Make sure they are not occupied before taking them.
- Fossils: It is not permitted to climb or dig into Oregon's coastal cliffs, dunes, or other protected geologic formations. You can collect invertebrate fossils (as long as they are naturally eroded and loose). A permit is required to collect vertebrate fossils (like dinosaurs or mammals).
Tip: The best time to search is when lots of rocks and gravel are showing on the beach. For the best luck, try to go when the sun is out and the tide is going out.
Build Amazing Sandcastles
A visit to the beach would not be the same without building a sandcastle. The beaches at Lincoln City are perfect for showcasing your sandcastle talents! Don't forget to bring buckets and shovels; while you're at it, take a picture of your masterpiece and share it with us on Facebook!
Explore Tide Pools at Low Tide
Each day along the Oregon Coast, low tide pools begin to appear, revealing ocean life just waiting to be explored. Watch as the hermit crabs venture out to look for new homes. Peak under rocks where you might spot a starfish tucked away or gripping tightly to the surface. Purple and green sea anemones will be visible during this time. Begin your low tide adventure at Roads End State Recreation Site or NW 15th Street Beach access. It's a great educational and fun way for the family to interact with coastal wildlife.
Check the tide chart before you go, and try to arrive about an hour before low tide. Make sure kids wear sturdy water shoes with good traction.
Try Crabbing or Clamming
Look for crabs and clams in the swirling currents and tidal mudflats of the Siletz Bay. Clam diggers frequent Siletz Bay, well-known for its profusion of purple varnish clams, cockles, and soft-shell clams. Crabbing is also very common in the region, particularly from October to December. Bring a bucket, boots, and a sense of adventure!
Fly a Kite
What's better than flying a kite in the steady ocean breeze! Lincoln City is a top spot for kite flying. If you don't have a kite, you can always pick one up from a local shop like Winddriven, then head to any beach and fly that kite high!
Have a Beach Picnic
Pack a homemade picnic or grab takeout from one of Lincoln City's local restaurants and head on down the beach for a family picnic! Family favorites include fish & chips, chowder, or sandwiches from nearby delis.
Watch for Whales
Bring binoculars if you're visiting from late December to early January or late March and do some whale watching. Gray whales migrate right past Lincoln City; you might even spot them from the shore. Look for spouts of water, backs, and tails of whales breaking the surface.
Explore D River State Recreation Site
This easily accessible beach is right in the middle of town and perfect for families who want quick beach access, restrooms, and picnic spots.
Bonfires on the Beach
As the sun sets, gather family for a classic beach bonfire. S'mores, stories, and the sound of the waves make for a pretty magical night! Before you go, make sure to check the local fire regulations.
Capture Family Photos at Sunset
Lincoln City sunsets are breathtaking, and the beach makes a perfect backdrop for your next holiday card. Bring a tripod or just use your phone to capture glowing, golden-hour smiles. Share the beautiful sunset on social media!
