When and Where Does the Kite Festival Take Place?
This year, Lincoln City will celebrate its 45th annual fall kite festival on September 19-21, 2025, at the D River State Recreation Site and will include its first-ever lighted night kite fly, which is a unique twist on a long-standing family vacation tradition. Enjoy fascinating kite demonstrations by specialists, kite-making workshops, and of course, the colorful, enormous kites that sail above the beach!
The Story Behind the Lincoln City Kite Festival
In September 1979, Lincoln City was a quiet, coastal town that all but shut down during the off-season when Steve Lamb, who owned Catch the Wind kite stores, put together the town’s very first kite festival. Among the attendees was longtime volunteer Ronda Brewer, who discovered her passion for kite flying at the event and eventually became an expert in rokkaku, a Japanese style of six-sided kite battling.
The event quickly grew into a signature coastal event, and in the mid-1980s, the Chamber of Commerce branded Lincoln City as the "Kite Capital of the World." The name stuck, and the kite festival has continued ever since, drawing visitors and kite enthusiasts from near and far every year.
