What are Lincoln City Glass Floats?
Lincoln City’s glass floats, also known as “Finders Keepers”, first appeared on the shores in 1997, after local artists had the idea that the floats would be a great way to ring in the new millennium. Inspired by Japanese fishing floats, the floats were first launched in 1999, with tourists from around the country coming to find their own. Today, the town’s shores see around 3,000 glass treasures blown by artisans around town for collectors to claim!
Where to Find Glass Floats in Lincoln City
Floats can be found all around the shoreline, both above the high tide line and below beach embankments. They’re placed on the shore every day during daylight, rain or shine. One place you won’t find these glasses is in beach grass, so that should cut down on your search time a bit! For the best chance of finding them, we suggest focusing your search near public beach access points.
Tips for Finding a Glass Float
These floats aren’t exactly hidden, since the whole point of them is to be found! That said, Finders Keepers floats are placed around the shore at random times, so don’t think you’re getting a head start by showing up to the beach early. Even the city staff doesn't know when or where floats are dropped. For the best chance of finding a glass, hang out at public beach access points along the shore during daylight for the best visibility.
What Happens if You Find One?
Were you lucky enough to find your own float? Congrats! When you find one, look for the identification number etched into the float, and call Lincoln City directly at 541-996-1274 to register your float. From there, you will receive a Certificate of Authenticity and information about the artist who created the float. If you’d rather register in person, head to the Lincoln City Visitor Information Center Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
Special Float Drops
Depending on when you decide to visit Lincoln City, you may have the chance to collect some very special glass floats dropped onshore to celebrate certain events, holidays, and times of the year.
Other Beach Treasures You Can Find
Once you find your glass float, stick around on the beach for some more combing! While the glass floats are the star of the show, there are plenty of treasures to be found along Lincoln City’s shore!
- Agates: These smooth, colorful stones are one of the Oregon Coast’s classic beachcombing finds. Look for them in gravelly areas, especially after storms.
- Sea glass: Pieces of weathered glass can wash ashore in soft greens, browns, blues, and whites, adding a little extra sparkle to your beach walk.
- Driftwood: Lincoln City’s shoreline often has beautifully shaped pieces of driftwood, perfect for photos or simply admiring as you explore.
- Shells and small fossils: You may spot shells, shell fragments, or other natural finds tucked into the sand along the waterline.
